The artist of today is a Scottish concept artist and illustrator, currently employed by Rockstar North, a British developer of videogames based in Edinburgh.
He discovered the world of concept art when he came across the work that Ralph McQuarrie had made for Star Wars and, of course it would be one of the works of the future, he began his adventure in the digital art world.
The confirmation of what would have been his professional future came when one of the blockbuster par excellence came out in cinemas: Alien.
He was so fascinated by the art of the film crew, composed by Ron Cobb, Chris Foss, H.Riger Giger and Jean ‘Moebius’ Giraud that he decided that this would be his way. He studies engraving and illustration at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee, one of the best schools of art and design in the United Kingdom.
Once he finished his studies Ian freelance and after a very short time he was recruited at DMA Design, today Rockstar North, collaborating on the creation of world-renowned videogames such as Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony and Grand Theft Auto V.
For over twenty years he has been active in the video game industry as lead concept artist and assistant art director and his illustrations are truly incredible.
But his talent is not limited only to this, the life of an artist of ian also develops and especially far from here, thanks to his personal work that can leave the audience literally speechless.
The worlds Ian creates are post-apocalyptic, futuristic and sci-fi, full of details and with a strong character. This universe is characterized by spaceships, shipyards and flying ships beautifully created so as to be absolutely credible.
His favorite tool is obviously Photoshop, but uses 3d Studio Max for creating and lighting scenes. Particularly attentive to the understanding of lights and shadows, Ian is certainly one of the most talented computer graphic artists of the moment. ?
